In the best tradition of tactical media, Steve bought a camera-equipped drone off the shelf, then set about using this consumer technology for political ends. Here you’ll get a look at four major infrastructures from the Joliet-Romeoville area: the BNSF Logistics park; the Wal-Mart warehouse; the NRG coal-fired plant in Lemont; and the nearby Citgo refinery. The last two are located alongside the railroad, the Sanitary Canal and the Des Plaines River, at the historical heart of the Southwest Corridor.
Corporations do not want us to see what happens behind their walls — presumably because they have things to hide. The remote-controlled camera, flying above public land, offers a clearer perspective on these infrastructures than can be gained by peeking through a fence or gazing from a bridge. It’s urgent to do this work right now, because tomorrow, the legal window of opportunity may close. One goal of this project is to simply perceive the industrial operations that shape our territory and our daily lives, usually without us knowing anything about them. Thanks for these glimpses from the air, Steve.
